It happened around 14:20 local time. The epicenter of the powerful 7.7-magnitude earthquake was 16 kilometers northwest of the Burmese city of Sagaing, not far from the city of Mandalay (Myanmar’s second largest city). After 12 minutes, another strong earthquake followed, with a magnitude of 6.4. This all caused causing tremors and aftershocks across hundreds of kilometers around. China, and Thailand felt shakes as well.
The Myanmar military junta has declared a state of emergency in affected regions. Thailand’s prime minister declared Bangkok an emergency zone, as damages happened across the city. Significant damage has been reported in Myanmar. There are reports of collapsed buildings, damaged roads, and even deaths and injuries so far. Tragically, a high-rise building under construction collapsed in Bangkok, resulting in fatalities and many people trapped. In the Chinese provinces of Yunnan and Guangxi (which border Myanmar) said they felt shakes after the quake as well.
This is just fresh news reported worldwide, therefore this is still a developing situation, and rescue operations are ongoing.
