Cyclone Chido in Mayotte caused hundred deaths for now

The strongest cyclone just hit Mayotte in over 90 years. It’s a devastating situation, it caused severe damage and hundreds of deaths in the archipelago, and affected the whole region. Cyclone Chido made landfall on Saturday, December 14th, 2024, with winds exceeding 200 km/h. While official numbers are still being confirmed, local authorities estimate that the death toll could be in the hundreds or even thousands. The cyclone caused widespread destruction of homes, infrastructure, and public buildings, including a hospital. The remoteness of Mayotte and the scale of the disaster are making it difficult to assess the full extent of the damage and provide necessary aid to the affected population.  The cyclone has disrupted access to food, water, and sanitation, raising concerns about public health.
