Monsoon in India kills at least 22 people so far

There are reports that heavy monsoon rains have recently caused significant disruption and loss of life in India, particularly in the northeast region. As of May 31, 2025, at least 22 people have been killed due to landslides and flash flooding triggered by days of heavy storm.

Widespread flooding in urban areas has led to long power outages and prompted authorities to shut down schools and colleges in some places. Several houses collapsed, and roads were blocked by landslides and over 1000 people in 25 villages in Meghalaya have been affected by floods and landslides.

India’s annual June-September monsoon season is crucial for agriculture and replenishing water supplies, but it often brings widespread death and destruction. This year, the monsoon arrived earlier than usual in some parts of the country, including Mumbai.

Authorities have issued red alerts for several districts and deployed rescue teams to assist affected populations. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast more heavy rains in the affected regions in the coming days.

The heavy monsoon activity is not limited to India and is impacting neighboring countries in South Asia as well. This is typical, as the Southwest Monsoon system affects a large part of the Indian subcontinent including coastal areas and islands as well. As of this moment, the heavy monsoon is affecting Bangladesh as well, as part of its widespread impact across South Asia.

Climate Change Impact: Scientists indicate that monsoons are becoming more erratic due to extreme weather and global warming, leading to more frequent and intense landslides and flash floods, especially in India’s Himalayan north.
